FAQ

Cebuano

What is Cebuano?

Cebuano is the primary language of the Philippines island of Cebu as well as other nearby islands such as Bohol, Negros Oriental, and portions of Leyte and Mindanao. It is spoken by approximately 20 million people.

Cebuano is an example of an Austronesian language, Malayo-Polynesian, like Tagalog, Indonesian and Malay, Hawaiian and Samoan.

Is Cebuano known by other names?

Yes, Cebuano is also known as Binisaya and Sugbuanon, as well as Bisaya, which is used for many related languages like Ilonggo and Waray.

Is Cebuano related to Oriental languages?

No, Cebuano is not related to languages such as Mandarin, Korean, Japanese or Vietnamese.

Are there other languages within Cebuano?

Modern Cebuano is rich with Spanish content, though the spelling of Spanish words may be altered to suit the Cebuano alphabet, such as trabajo being spelled trabaho. Cebuano also makes interesting use of English. While English vocabulary is not officially part of Cebuano, when there is no Cebuano word or phrase for something, like pen, English is frequently used, instead.
